The Power of Geri Allen, Volume 2

Co-Edited by Yoko Suzuki and Michael Heller

Deadline for Abstract/Proposals: August 1, 2024
Full Manuscripts Due: December 1, 2024

Over the past fifty years, few artists in the jazz tradition have exerted more influence or sheer musical power then the pianist Geri Allen (1957-2017). Allen’s brilliance illuminated any performance in which she took part, and she was equally at home in all corners of the Black music tradition. Upon her passing in 2017, Allen left behind a tremendous ourvre of work as an instrumentalist, composer, and educator. Her legacy continues to reverberate today among devotees of the music.

Jazz and Culture is issuing a call for research toward a second special issue studying this landmark artist figure. This volume will follow on the heels of our initial 2020 issue The Power of Geri Allen. We seek research, oral histories, reviews, creative work, or any other appropriate submission that may provide insight into this unique figure.

To submit, please send a proposal of 300-500 words in either .pdf or .doc format to: Pittjazz@pitt.edu.

Jazz and Culture is an annual, peer-reviewed publication devoted to publishing cutting-edge research on jazz from multiple perspectives. All methodological approaches are welcome, including ethno/musicology, music theory, and critical and cultural studies. Drawing upon recent trends in music scholarship, we further seek to interrogate a range of issues connecting music, race, class, gender, and other realms of social practice. We particularly encourage submissions exploring the music’s international scope.
